A Change from Ordinary Time

This Sunday (Nov. 2) and next week (Nov. 9), the 31st and 32nd Sundays in Ordinary Time are replaced by the celebrations of The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls) and The Dedication of the Lateran Basilica. The last time this happened was 2014.

On All Souls' Day we pray for those who have died but have not yet fully entered the heavenly kingdom. The Liturgy takes on a reflective tone. On Nov. 9 we celebrate the Cathedral Church of the Diocese of Rome, St. John Lateran, which is the mother Church for all Catholics. This feast provides us with an opportunity to reflect on the role that the pope, the bishop of Rome, has in bearing witness to Christ and to preserving the unity of the Christian faithful.

The liturgical year will end with the Great Solemnity of Christ the King on Nov. 23.
