From our Pastor's Desk
|
|
The readings this weekend remind us that everything we have is a gift entrusted to us by God. The question is not only what we have received, but what fruit we are producing with what God has placed in our hands. In the first reading the prophet Isaiah speaks to the people of Judah in the eighth century BC, at a time when God’s people had received much, yet were failing to live faithfully. Through the beautiful image of a vineyard, Isaiah describes God’s relationship with Israel. The owner carefully prepares the vineyard, plants the best vines, protects them, and provides everything they need. Yet, at harvest, it produces only wild grapes. The vineyard represents Israel, and God is the owner. God had given his people everything they needed to flourish, but they failed to produce the fruit he expected. And what fruit was God looking for? Isaiah gives the answer: justice and righteousness. Instead, God found bloodshed and heard the cries of people who were suffering. Their relationship with God had become disconnected from the way they treated others. This passage makes us ask an uncomfortable question: What kind of fruit is my life producing? God has given each of us gifts, opportunities, relationships and countless blessings. But what does he find when he looks at our lives? Does he find kindness, forgiveness, generosity and concern for those who are struggling? Or does he find selfishness, indifference and resentment? God does not bless us simply so that we can enjoy his blessings. He blesses us so that our lives can become a blessing to others. God looks not only at what we believe, but also at what our lives produce.

Our Ministries Bear Fruit |
"By this is my Father glorified, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples." - John 15:8
During September, we planted seeds and strengthened our roots. Now we begin to see what happens when a parish is deeply rooted in Christ:
It bears fruit.
Every day at St. Katharine Drexel Parish, our ministries put faith into action. We teach our children. We welcome families. We serve at Mass. We care for those in need. We pray with one another. We comfort those who are hurting. We share our faith and build community.
Each ministry is different, but together they are the fruit of a living, growing parish.

St. Francis of Assisi |
|
Founder, Peacemaker and Servant of the Poor St. Francis of Assisi was born Giovanni di Pietro di Bernardone around 1181 or 1182 in Assisi, Italy. His father was a prosperous cloth merchant, and Francis grew up surrounded by comfort and privilege. As a young man, he enjoyed fine clothing, celebrations and dreams of becoming a knight. His life began to change after experiencing war, imprisonment and illness. These experiences caused Francis to question what he truly wanted from life and gradually opened his heart to a deeper relationship with Christ. One of the defining moments of his conversion came when Francis encountered a man suffering from leprosy. Francis had always feared and avoided those with the disease, but this time he approached the man, embraced him and showed him compassion. What he once found frightening became an encounter with Christ.

Why is Important to Belong to a Parish Ministry? |
|
01 Glorifying God by serving in my parish ministry is the purpose of my salvation: God has placed you in your parish in order that you might be edified (built up) so that you might work for and serve Him. To remain sedentary is to neglect God's very purpose for our salvation. By serving, I behave like Jesus and glorify Him.
02 I have been uniquely gifted to serve: Several Bible passages help us to understand the concept of spiritual gifts. Among them are Romans 12, 1 Corinthians 12, and Ephesians 4. In these chapters we learn how God graciously and supernaturally favors each believer with his own distinct ministry gift! What a privilege is ours!
03 Ministry service will demonstrate the reality of my faith: Nobody said it more poignantly than James when he taught us that faith is not primarily about what we know (or have heard), and it is not primarily about what we say. Quite simply, faith without works is dead.
