The first Augustinian Pope, Leo XIV is the second Roman Pontiff after Pope Francis from the Americas. Unlike Jorge Mario Bergoglio, however, the 69-year-old Robert Francis Prevost is from the northern part of the continent, though he spent many years as a missionary in Peru.

The new Bishop of Rome was born on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, to Louis Marius Prevost, of French and Italian descent, and Mildred Martínez, of Spanish descent. He has two brothers, Louis Martín and John Joseph. He spent his childhood and adolescence with his family and studied first at the Minor Seminary of the Augustinian Fathers and then at Villanova University in Pennsylvania, where in 1977 he earned a Degree in Mathematics and also studied Philosophy.

Today, we celebrate the Fifth Sunday of Easter as we draw closer to the end of this liturgical season, which will culminate in the solemnities of the Ascension of the Lord and Pentecost. In today's Gospel, Jesus begins to prepare the apostles for His physical farewell as He ascends to take His place at the Father’s right hand. He assures them that they will not be left orphaned; rather, He will accompany them with special care and announce the arrival of the Holy Spirit, who will guide them toward the knowledge of the truth. That same Holy Spirit continually guides us in our daily lives when we call upon Him with faith and humility. He strengthens us amid trials and pain, filling us with hope as we journey toward the Promised Land. Let us trust in the merciful presence of God, who never abandons us and fills us with His infinite love.

Hoy celebramos el Quinto Domingo de Pascua, acercándonos al final de este tiempo litúrgico, que culminará con las solemnidades de la Ascensión del Señor y Pentecostés. En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús comienza a preparar a los apóstoles para su despedida física al ascender a la diestra del Padre. Les asegura que no quedarán huérfanos; al contrario, los acompañará con especial cuidado y les anunciará la llegada del Espíritu Santo, quien los guiará hacia el conocimiento de la verdad. Ese mismo Espíritu Santo nos guía continuamente en nuestra vida diaria cuando lo invocamos con fe y humildad. Nos fortalece en medio de las pruebas y el dolor, llenándonos de esperanza en nuestro camino hacia la Tierra Prometida. Confiemos en la presencia misericordiosa de Dios, que nunca nos abandona y nos llena de su infinito amor.
