This weekend the Universal Church celebrates The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls Day). One of the beautiful aspects of the Catholic Church is the way that our history is kept alive in the prayers of the community. The Memorial of All Souls is part of this history, and is still a living reality in our Church. The commemoration goes back to the eleventh century with a decree of St. Odilo of Cluny that the monks of the Cluny Abbey were to spend a day in prayer for the dearly departed. Shortly after this, the universal Church celebrated this day of prayer for all the faithful who died yet were not recognized as saints.

In the Fourteenth Century the memorial was moved to November 2nd to link it with the Feast of All Saints on November 1st. The idea is that just as the saints are holy with God in heaven, the souls of the faithful departed who were not in heaven were to a lesser degree holy as they prepared for heaven. Dante Alighieri in the Second Book of the Divine Comedy, The Purgatorio, presents the souls in purgatory as holding themselves back from climbing the mountain of God until they are able to accept the fullness of his love. The prayers of their loved ones still on earth opened them up to God's love. That is the history; now we must look to the living reality.

One of humanity’s greatest fears is the fear of rejection, not just fear of being rejected by our society or community, but a far deeper fear of rejection. To some extent, we all fear being rejected by God. We are all painfully aware of our human limitations and our personal sins. When our physical lives come to an end, we fear that God will reject us. After all, we think, why would God want someone who has lied, cheated, taken advantage of others, broken vows, and much more, to be in the same place as his mother, Mary, or St. John Paul II, St. Teresa of Calcutta, St. Katharine Drexel and all those saints we celebrated yesterday. We not only fear that we will be rejected by God, but we also understand His reasons for doing so.

Este fin de semana, la Iglesia Universal celebra la Conmemoración de Todos los Fieles Difuntos (Día de los Fieles Difuntos). Uno de los aspectos más hermosos de la Iglesia Católica es la forma en que nuestra historia se mantiene viva en las oraciones de la comunidad. La Conmemoración de los Fieles Difuntos forma parte de esta historia y sigue siendo una realidad viva en nuestra Iglesia. La conmemoración se remonta al siglo XI con un decreto de San Odilón de Cluny que disponía que los monjes de la Abadía de Cluny dedicarían un día a orar por los difuntos. Poco después, la Iglesia Universal celebró este día de oración por todos los fieles que fallecieron sin ser reconocidos como santos.

En el siglo XIV, la conmemoración se trasladó al 2 de noviembre para vincularla con la festividad de Todos los Santos, el 1 de noviembre. La idea es que, así como los santos están con Dios en el cielo, las almas de los fieles difuntos que no estaban en el cielo eran, en menor grado, santas mientras se preparaban para el cielo. Dante Alighieri, en el Segundo Libro de la Divina Comedia, El Purgatorio, presenta a las almas del purgatorio impidiéndose ascender a la montaña de Dios hasta que pudieran aceptar la plenitud de su amor. Las oraciones de sus seres queridos, aún en la tierra, les abrían al amor de Dios. Esa es la historia; ahora debemos mirar la realidad viva.

Uno de los mayores temores de la humanidad es el miedo al rechazo; no solo el miedo a ser rechazado por nuestra sociedad o comunidad, sino un miedo mucho más profundo. En mayor o menor medida, todos tememos ser rechazados por Dios. Todos somos dolorosamente conscientes de nuestras limitaciones humanas y nuestros pecados personales. Cuando nuestra vida física llega a su fin, tememos que Dios nos rechace. Después de todo, nos preguntamos, ¿por qué querría Dios que alguien que ha mentido, engañado, se ha aprovechado de otros, ha roto votos y mucho más, esté en el mismo lugar que su madre, María, o San Juan Pablo II, Santa Teresa de Calcuta, Santa Katharine Drexel y todos esos santos que celebramos ayer? No solo tememos ser rechazados por Dios, sino que también entendemos sus razones para hacerlo.
